This somewhat ugly duckling has been mine since around 1989 when I bought it new from Charlottesville Music. I was the bass player and sometimes singer for cover band Little Smoke (named after the Carlos Castenada ally). I've used it pretty much whenever I played bass since then, and the best recorded examples are definitely on the Palace releases Viva Last Blues and Arise Therefore. It has also gone out on loan to Dave Heumann and Walker Teret. It's not like I think it's some super-valuable collector's item, but I thought there might be someone out there who would be keen to own it as a bass with some interesting history. It is also a great-playing, great-sounding bass. It is a Fender P-Bass Lyte in Frost White with gold hardware, and I don't think I was ever in love with its cosmetics; rather, its playability, functionality, lightness and tone.
Anymore, I don't play a lot of bass, but since a friend loaned me a standard precision bass with string-through body about twelve years ago, I've kept my eyes open for a good deal on one and just the other day found one and bought it (from a dude in Richmond who was planning to go see ten Phish shows in New York and decided to just go ahead and move there, so was potlatching). I don't need two basses, and refuse to be sentimental. Plus, I need the space.
Thanks Juan Molina!
